In the realm of education today, particularly within the context of remote learning and post-pandemic classrooms, maintaining student engagement is paramount. Despite observing increased task involvement during the pandemic, there has been a notable decline in active engagement, with a concerning 50% of students expressing disinterest even after the lifting of lockdowns. Educators are understandably troubled by this trend, (Ober et al, 2023).
However, amidst these challenges, there exist ample opportunities to enhance engagement through the strategic application of remote learning strategies and tools. Approaches such as gamification, continuous feedback mechanisms, and real-time collaboration have shown promise in revitalizing student participation and interest. Notably, a 2022 report from Instructure underscores the preference among students for hands-on and experiential learning approaches, (Instructure, 2022).
The persistent issue of student engagement can be attributed to the difficulties in transitioning between passive and active learning, exacerbated by shrinking attention spans. Educators can tackle this by emphasizing the personal relevance of course content, offering tailored support and fostering individual interaction, infusing enthusiasm through interactive presentations and gamified activities, and integrating real-world applications into coursework.
Furthermore, technology emerges as a valuable ally in combating classroom monotony. Recent advancements, such as live polls, interactive discussions, and online games, have transformed traditional lectures into collaborative experiences, thereby enhancing engagement levels. Given that Generation Z is inherently digital-native, leveraging classroom technology is not just advantageous but imperative, with a significant 75% of students acknowledging its positive impact on their learning journey, (Instructure, 2022; Poll Everywhere, 2024).
